The Road Less Travelled
As I drove past a ramshackle wreck of a farmhouse in the Free State in 2001, I was forced to stop by the absolute beauty of the ugliness of it all. As I walked around the foundations of the ruin with the red earth powdering my city slicker shoes, I could almost hear the whispers of the people that once breathed and loved and hated and laughed and cried and lived and died within its walls.
Memories crowd of landscapes passing, unique architecture sometimes desolate but dripping with intentions lost. What were the intentions of the men who created these life containers, who wounded the earth with metal and wood, who fed the sand with sweat, blood and tears.
Imagine the buildings, towns, cemeteries could talk what would they whisper of humanity, of the flesh and bone filled mortals that built them? And so the idea was borne of a photo blog road trip through a place that embodies the freedom of spirit and wildness of desolation.....The Karoo.
What is it within wounded men that inspires the need to pack the battered suitcase and seek solitude? Let you and me find out....
